How to check if an Instagram username is available

The checker looks the name up on Instagram. If no account uses it, the name is very likely free. Names of banned or recently deleted accounts can stay locked for a while, so Instagram has the final word when you sign up or rename your account.

Instagram username rules

• 1 to 30 characters.
• Only letters, numbers, periods and underscores; no spaces or other symbols.
• It can’t start or end with a period, or have two periods in a row.
• Usernames aren’t case-sensitive: PimpMyAcc and pimpmyacc are the same name.

How to pick a good username

• Short and easy to say — people should be able to type it after hearing it once.
• The same everywhere: check that the name is free on TikTok and YouTube too.
• Avoid numbers and extra underscores that look random or like a fake account.
• Add a word, not noise: “official”, “hq”, “studio” or your city read better than “_x_”.
