How to calculate Instagram engagement rate
Engagement rate by followers is the share of followers who like or comment on a post:
ER = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100%
Type a username and the calculator reads the account’s latest posts for you: it takes the average likes and comments of up to 12 recent posts, leaves out pinned posts (they are usually old hits) and shows the rate of each post. For Reels it also shows engagement by plays. For a private account, or to check a single post, switch to Enter numbers.
Why engagement rate matters
Followers show how big an account is; engagement shows whether anyone cares. Instagram shows posts with many early likes and comments to more people, so engagement drives reach. Brands look at it before a collaboration because a smaller account with an engaged audience often sells better than a big one with a silent audience.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
- Below 1% — low.
- 1–3% — average for most accounts.
- 3–6% — good.
- Above 6% — excellent; common for small, close communities.
Big accounts usually have a lower rate than small ones: a 2% rate on a million followers is a strong result.
These ranges are the ones most often quoted; the real average depends on the niche, the account’s size and the type of content. Compare an account with similar ones, and with its own results over time.
How to improve your Instagram engagement
- Post Reels. They reach people who don’t follow you yet and usually get more interactions.
- Ask for a reaction. A question in the caption or on the first slide gets more comments.
- Reply to comments in the first hour: the conversation itself counts as engagement.
- Post when your followers are online — Instagram’s Insights show the hours.
- Help new posts start. Early likes and comments tell Instagram the post is worth showing to more people.
