How to calculate Facebook engagement rate
For a Facebook page, engagement rate is usually measured against the page’s followers:
ER = (reactions + comments + shares) ÷ page followers × 100%
Reactions include likes and the other reactions (Love, Care, Haha, Wow, Sad, Angry). For a page average, add up the numbers of recent posts and divide by the number of posts first.
Why engagement rate matters
Facebook shows page posts to only part of the followers at first and widens the audience when people react. Engagement therefore decides how many people actually see a page’s posts, and it is the clearest sign of whether the content works.
What is a good engagement rate on Facebook?
- Below 0.5% — low.
- 0.5–1% — average.
- 1–3% — good.
- Above 3% — excellent.
Facebook rates are lower than on Instagram or TikTok because pages reach a smaller part of their followers.
These ranges are the ones most often quoted; the real average depends on the niche, the account’s size and the type of content. Compare an account with similar ones, and with its own results over time.
How to improve your Facebook engagement
- Post native video and photos rather than only links.
- Ask questions and run simple polls.
- Reply to comments quickly — conversations keep a post in feeds longer.
- Post when your audience is online (see Meta Business Suite insights).
- Help posts start. Early post likes and reactions make a post look worth reading.
