Best Time to Post on Instagram: How to Find Yours

There is no single best time that works for every account. Here is why, how to find your own best times in Insights, and how much timing really matters for Reels.

Quick answer

The best time to post is when your own followers are online, shortly before their peak. Find it in Insights → Total followers → Most active times, which shows the hours and days your followers use Instagram. Post 30–60 minutes before the top hours, test a few slots for two to three weeks, and keep the ones that bring the most reach and engagement. Timing matters most for feed posts and Stories; Reels keep getting recommended for days.

Why there is no universal best time

Published “best times” come from averages across thousands of accounts in different countries and niches. Your followers may live in other time zones, work night shifts or be students who scroll late. That is why the number in a study can be exactly wrong for you — while your own Insights are based on your actual audience.

How to find your best time in Insights

You need a professional (creator or business) account; switching is free in Settings.

  1. Open your profile → Professional dashboard → Insights.
  2. Tap Total followers and scroll to Most active times.
  3. Switch between Hours and Days to see when your followers are on Instagram.
  4. Note the top two or three hours on your strongest days. Times are shown in your phone’s time zone.

Tip: post 30–60 minutes before the peak, not at it. The first reactions then come in while the most followers are opening the app, which helps the post spread.

Test, don’t guess

Insights show when people are online, not when they react most to your posts. Run a simple test:

  1. Pick three slots from your Most active times — for example a morning, a lunchtime and an evening slot.
  2. For two to three weeks, rotate similar posts across those slots.
  3. Compare reach and engagement after 48 hours for each slot. Our Instagram Engagement Calculator shows the engagement of your latest posts side by side.
  4. Keep the winning slots and test a new one every month — audiences change.

Does timing matter for Reels and Stories?

  • Feed posts — timing matters most: they are shown mostly to followers, and early reactions decide how far they go.
  • Stories — they disappear after 24 hours, so posting when followers are online gets them seen before they expire.
  • Reels — timing matters less. They are recommended to non-followers in other time zones and can keep getting views for days. Post them when you can reply to early comments.

If your audience is in several time zones

Look at Top locations in the same Insights section. If most followers are in one region, post for that region. If they are split, alternate slots between regions, or aim for the hours where the active periods overlap.

Timing is the last 10%

The best time can’t save a post people don’t want to react to, and a great post will do well at an average time. Get the content, hooks and consistency right first — our guide on how to increase Instagram engagement covers what moves the numbers most — then use timing to squeeze out more.
